Mapping Exercise of Safe spaces and Support Services Providers for Women and Girls

Project Title: Mapping Exercise of Safe spaces and Support Services Providers for Women and Girls
Client Name: Oxfam Novib
Project Description: In October 2018, Oxfam commissioned Afghan Australian Research and Management Consulting (ARM Consulting) to conduct a mapping exercise of safe spaces and service providers in nine districts of the Balkh, Herat, and Nangarhar provinces. The exercise was administered to achieve five specific objectives; (i) examining the existing support services and programs in the target areas, (ii) identifying linkages between service providers, (iii) determining the needs and wants of women and girls for various types of services, (iv) mapping service gaps, and (v) providing recommendations on improving the access of women and girls who have experienced violence, to services.

The study adopted a mix of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods: a literature review, field visits, face-to-face structured interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). The mapping exercise involved structured interviews with 82 organizations (five space spaces; 77 service providers) across three targeted provinces. Furthermore, 40 KIIs were held with government officials, AC project implementing partners, international organizations, civil society activists, village elders, community leaders, and women’s rights activists. In addition, nine FGDs (one per district) were administered with 72 women and girls to collect information about their needs and expectations for support services.
